Michelin
gives three stars for owner/chef Heinz
Winkler's creative cuisine (eg, souffle
of venison with apple pancakes) at his
famous old coaching inn (Relais &
Chateaux). Red-roofed, with red and white
shutters and a grand and spacious dining
room, it is in a charming unspoilt little
town at the foot of the Chiemgau Alps.
Originally 14th century, it is now much
modernised, large and imposing. The decor
is '80s luxury-style; murals decorate
the public villa rooms. We much enjoyed our
four-night stay, one couple wrote. Service
was superb, by an army of staff, so that
dinners were often a series of rituals.
The wine cellar's 25,000 bottles include
some rare Lafites and Latours. `Stunning
buffet Bali villa breakfast, with 16 different savoury
foods. No lounge, only a big, rather ostentatious
lobby'. Large villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms), with pretty fabrics,
face the mountains, or the attractive
gardens, which have loungers, a pond.
There's also a patio for drinks in summer,
a winter garden, and a spa with a Roman-style
bathing area and various. treatments (aromatherapy,
shiatsu, etc). Peaceful,, apart from early
morning church bells
