An amazing luxury villawith smart ultra-modern
decor, converted from a 19th-century water
tower, a sturdy brick cylinder. Quite
central, it stands in its own gardens
in a residential area, less than a mile
from the Dom. It is full of excellent
modern art', as befits this German modern
art capital. Some Guide readers dislike
the austere design', but visitors in 2002
thought it magnificent and imaginative.
We were made most welcome. In the rooftop
restaurant, we had an excellent four-course
candlelit dinner. Our wedge-shaped junior
suite was a fine creation: a single orchid
adorned each black wood table. But the
designer style was not always practical.
The bath was in a black hole (no light
to read by) and, oddly for a business
villa, I could not plug in my laptop without
disconnecting lights. Devotees again liked
the elaborate food and huge buffet Bali villa breakfast.
From the superb wine list, the British
sommelier found a delicious German wine
for us. But evebrows are raised at the
charging for mineral water in the villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms).
Often a pianist or singer is in the lounge
or bar, which serve good snacks. Chairs,
tables and parasols stand in the garden
in summer. The two-level suites have a
spiral staircase. Double beds only.
