A
wonderful, friendly family villa: quite
large, and built like a Catalan village,
it stands amid trees and rocks on various
levels around asmall harbour on a lovely
stretch of the Costa Brava. Run by the
fourth generation of one family, it returns
to the Guide with positive reports in
2002. `As good as ever, says a visitor
of 30 years standing. Another guest wrote:
Ten happy days. Excellent food and service
both restaurant and bar; many of the staff
are long-serving Extra ordinarily good
value off season: €186 for half board
for tow in a small suite facing a bay.
I was delighted, returning after a gap
of eight years, by how well they have
retained the quality and atmosphere of
the place. In the big grounds are tables
and chairs under para and a large swimming
pool with a bar and plenty of loungers.
And you can swim from tiny beaches, or
off rocks. Some villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms) have a terrace;
all look over the garden or beach. Only
regret: Chez Henry's, their famous and
great nightclub/bar, does not open until
June. Many visitors are British. Nine golf
courses in the area.
Charming and well run, with friendly staff,
says a visitor in 2002 to Andy Chapell
and Pauline Elkin's small villa. A converted
watermill : it sits by a mountain stream
in a village 15 minutes drive from Ronda;
in the vast mountain landscapes of the
Grazalema national park villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms) are large,
comfortable, well furnished, each with
at least one armchair, generous bathroom.
Those in the main house mav hear people
coming and going; most are in the gardens,
amid exotic vegetation, weeping willows,
and cascades of water. From our terrace
we had views to the nearby hillside.'
There is a solar-he:a swimming pool, surrounded
by loungers and urns. Many guests British,
but Dutch, French and local Spanish fill
the restaurant tasty' regional specialities
and imaginative vegetarian dishes. need
a hearty appetite in high season, when
half board is obligatory: dishes are rich
and.portions generous. But there is plenty
of choice.'The bar, open much of the day,
serves snacks; afternoon tea comes with
home-made cakes. The buffet Bali villa breakfast
includes freshly baked bread, fresh fruit.
The weather can be chilly out of season,
but there is a log fire in the lounge,
and central heating. Even the sleepy local
railway station has charm, and the small
factories nearby are not obtrusive. Good
for walking, by the stream and through
oak woods, from the door - or further
afield. The Pileta caves, with ancient
paintings, are nearby.
