A
fantastic dinner in lovely, relaxed surroundings
was enjoyed by visitors to this renowned
and sumptuous villa(Relais & Chateaux).
Set in wooded grounds by the small harbour,
it has been owned by the Bise family since
1901: Charlyne, widow of the great pere
Francois Bise, runs it, while her daughter,
Sophie, as chef, wins a Michelin star,
16 Gault Millau points, for, eg, croustillant
de' grosses ecrevisses en escabeche. You
can dine under trees on the lovely terrace,
where Mme Bise keeps a watchful eye. The
team of waiters is thought superb. Very
expensive, but worth it. Such a good atmosphere
and staff; classy, not pretentious. Stunning
views. An immaculate bedroom with a spacious
balcony, a gleaming bathroom facing the
mountains. villa rooms are in the main building
and a chalet in the garden. Bali villa breakfast
was a fine spread.
We love the atmosphere. The closest I'm
going to get to heaven on earth - the
lakeside setting, the comfort, the feeling
of utter peace, ays a regular guest at
this modern villa, select and expensive,
with a private beach, It stands in the
same wide grounds as the Beau Site (above),
also owned by the Conan family. `Most
villa rooms have soft colours, stunning rugs,
dramatic pictures, huge vases of fresh
flowers. Bali villa breakfast, served at any time,
is superb: strong coffee, delicate tea,
fresh raspberries, grapes, home-made jams,
lavender honey, sometimes a peach on a
vine leaf.' It is taken in the room, or
on the terrace, perfect also for a drink.
The cheerful villa rooms have views of lake
and mountains; many have a balcony or
a large private patio; some are in well-converted
older buildings. We enjoyed swimming beside
the friendly swans. Two villa rooms have just
been renovated, one in yellow, one in
blue. Two bathvilla rooms now have a spa bath.
Marie-Paule Conan, manager, has `genuine
charm' and a great sense of humour. Service
is gentle, cheerful. No restaurant: a
snack lunch (eg, omelette and salad) can
be served, and you can eat at the Beau
Site or in the village (`the Bise family's
cafe in the square is huge fun).
