Simple rustic accommodation (no facilities en suite) in isolated old green-and-white log cabin, up winding dirt road, 26 miles S of Trondheim. Views of lake (good hiking paths). Cosy restaurant, popular with locals: genuine Norwegian cooking by attentive chef. Large, comfortable sitting area. All major credit cards accepted.

Traveller's tale villain Denmark. It is charming in many ways, but when it was full it became abundantly clear how little soundproofing had been used in its restoration. People's phone calls, snoring, sneezes, travel discussions, crying children, bathroom ablutions, door-slammings: all these could be heard clearly. There were amazingly noisy footfalls above my room. I will return only if I become deaf or nearly so.

I was startled to hear someone sigh - it sounded as if the person was in the same room as me, but it was a man whose bed was the other side of the partition wall. Every sound could be clearly heard: It would have been possible to hold a conversation with the person in the next - room without raising your voice. I got little sleep.
