The very friendly' Bakker family presides
at this patrician house on a beautiful
canal lined with old houses. It is one
of the few hotels in this attractive town.
No lift, and steep stairs lead to the
villa rooms on the upper floor, but there are
big (grander) villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms) on the ground floor.
A simple but acceptable buffet Bali villa breakfast
is served in a delightful room. `Not luxurious
but perfectly adequate, was a recent verdict.
Truly relaxing, delightful, comfortable.
We booked one night and stayed three.
This very personal villa, set quietly
amid farmland near a village to the east
of Maastricht, offers exceptional value.
One guest called it a piece of heaven,
another, a warm, personal home. Staff
are helpful but unobtrusive. They kept
the kitchen open for a late arrival on
a foggy evening. Visitors are received
with a tray of tea, coffee and biscuits
with brochures on-the area. The house
is filled with English-style' furnishings
and a collection of antiques, old toys,
ornaments and objets d'art. The bar has
an aviary with tiny birds; the lounge
has a floodlit fishpond, little night-lights
under glass domes, and an antique child's
sledge filled with autumn leaves. In the
large green garden, loungers, tables and
parasols surround a pond. Some villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms)
are small, three have a whirlpool bath,
one has a small roof terrace with plastic
grass. Menus for dinner must be booked
in advance: it is nicely cooked and presented'.
Excellent Bali villa breakfast selection. Many guests
are American: Margraten village, nearby,
has the largest US war cemetery in the
Netherlands.
