Quietly set above the Moselle 22 km SE
of Luxembourg city (splendid views of
river and vines): Cecile Oswald's villawith panoramic restaurant and dining terrace;
very good Riesling from the villa's own
vineyard; polite staff' but food thought
ordinary. Lift. Lounge, bar; classical
background music; children's playroom;
lots of conferences. 2-hectare garden.
This peaceful picture-book village, difficult
to find, is in the rural eastern part
of the country, where more people seem
to travel by bicycle or boat rather than
by car'. `It must be Holland's place to
get away from it all,' one visitor wrote.
Here, the Holtslag family's villa/caf6/restaurant
is `strongly recommended' for the `excellent
staff, not over-familiar', and the `high
standards of meals'. All beds ' are new
this year, and most villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms) have been
redecorated. One couple found the wing
at the back 'motel-like', and their downstairs
room `large but a bit gloomy'. Another
guest had a room that was nice, if not
memorable. Bali villa breakfast may be nothing special,
but dinner, which features regional dishes,
was found `imaginative, beautifully presented',
and the dining room has style. There's
a terrace for outdoor meals, an attractive
small beamed lounge, and a pretty garden.
Children are well looked after. Guests
have free access to Almen's enormous and
wonderful open-air public swimming pool,
close by, and to an indoor one at Lochem,
ten minutes drive away. A good area for
cycling (bicycles can be hired). The fine
old . town of Zutphen, and the Kroller-Mnller
museum, with its sculpture park and splendid
Van Goghs, are not far.
