A
classical music festival is held every
July in this medieval town's fine flamboyant
Gothic church, part of a former Benedictine
abbey. The 17th-century abbot's house
is now this stylish, spotless little villa,
named after a medieval Flemish prince
who lived in nearby Abbeville. The Belgian
owners, Marc and Bernadette Stubbe'vlartens,
are hard-working, very pleasant, multilingual,
cultured and entertaining. Attention to
detail is apparent throughout, say visitors
in 2002. Each of the comfortable villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms)
(three are in the beamed loft) has an
excellent bathroom, and the `largely do-it
yourself' Bali villa breakfast is substantial. There's
an elegant patio with tables and chairs.
Here you can enjoy `informal light eating'
of salads and snacks (no full restaurant).
A famous old inn (Clas on the Corner):
built in 1731 at one of the northern toll
gates, it is mentioned in contemporary
poems and essays. have rarely felt a villamore welcoming, says a Canadian visitor
in 2002, restoring it to the Guide. The
young woman at Reception marked my map
with the words: "Here is your home":
most appropriate. The villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms), simple
but quiet, satisfactory in every way,
are all different, decorated in the style
of Gustav III. In the restaurant I had
my best meals in Stockholm [traditional
Swedish cooking]. The bar and the patio
[with summer meal service] were inviting.
Earlier visitors loved the lavish use
of candles, and the antiques in the villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms).
The low-lying traditional wooden building,
in a neighbourhood both `interesting and
varied', contrasts with the high-rises
all around. Parking is available, and
there is easy access to the old city by
public transport.
