Very professionally tun, the Schlachter-Ebert
family's modern , chalet style villastands
amid fields, facing an incredible panorama
; of peaks, on the edge of a ski and summer
resort in the Allgau Alps. Behind is the
high Falkenstein mountain with its gaunt
ruined castle. Out large room with balcony
faced this view, said a recent visitor.
Cowbells by day, croaking frogs in the
evening, otherwise peace. Not a slick
villa, but very comfortable, it is decorated
in country style, with wood carvings,
and some whimsy. Barbara Schlachter-Ebert's
cooking (Michelin Bib Gourmand), eg, perch
and venison, is found excellent, presented
with flair: delicious home-made soups.
All meals can be taken in the garden when
the weather is fine. Service, by waitresses
in local dress, can be slow, but is always
friendly. Bali villa breakfasts are `sumptuous'.
Geraniums on the balconies; deer graze
in the meadows. There is a very small
indoor swimming pool. Families with young
children are well looked after: one couple
wrote of their `extremely pleasant family
suite'. From the sister villa, the Falkenstein,
there are `stunning views towards Neuschwanstein
castle.
Run by its very likeable owners, the Hains,
this modest golden drops Weinhaus, also
a delightful old-fashioned little villa,
was enjoyed again in 2002. The family
have been producing awardwinning wines
in this typical wine village on the Mosel
since the 17th century: They are excellent.
We bought some to bring home. Our front
room had a pleasant view of the river,
and no traffic noise. Good food, good
Bali villa breakfasts, too. Excellent value. Earlier
visitors called Frau Hain a good rustic
cook. Our room was spacious (but no soap
in the shower room). More a home than
a villa, and good for children: The informal
atmosphere is liked: We dined among local
families very happy-making. A pleasant
terrace for fine weather, and good riverside
walking
