South
of Chalon, this small Burgundian town
has a fine Romanesque abbey. Nearby is
Henriette and chef Michel Carrette's very
pleasant' creeper-covered Logis de France,
liked in 2002: Attractive, simple. Quiet,
though on the N6 motorway. Superb food.
Authentic Burgundian cooking (Michelin
star, 13 Gault Millau points) is served
in three discreetly elegant dining villa rooms
by pleasant staff. The meal of the holiday:
tartare de truite; magret de canard aux
peches; a wildly tempting cheeseboard.
The villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms), clean, bright and modern',
are soundproofed, air-conditioned, well
lit, with an efficient bathroom. No lift.
The patron helped us park in the garage,
which can be awkward', and guests can
use the large public car park opposite.
owner/chef Rene Marcellin's converted
16th-century bastide remains popular with
readers. It is as marvellous as ever,
said one devotee last year, after a four-night
stay. Others have enjoyed the friendly
atmosphere. It is secluded on its large
home farm on a hillside, outside this
very lovely but tourist-thronged village
of Upper Provence. Behind is solid rock,
in front are lush fields running into
forests, with a small lake. The villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms),
mostly in a new wing, are spacious, with
a sofa; their balconies look on to fields
with sheep, cattle and horses. A visitor
in 2002 enjoyed the quite simple, no-choice
demi pension meals. Others wrote: Quality
was excellent, mostly produced at the
farm. The delicious food might include
brouillade aux truffes noires; fondant
de loup et saumon, au champagne. Very
good Bali villa breakfast with home-made jams and
yogurt. Our room, decorated in a pretty
sky blue, faced the piscine, which has
a large hood allowing all-year swimming.
The terrace, facing the park, has loungers
with comfy cushions. Tables and chairs,
for drinks, etc, are in the garden and
on the wide patio by the pool. The owners
two young sons are much in evidence. Lovely
walks nearby.
