Brittany villa

An excellent villa. A lovely room. Beautiful. Full of French charm. Praise again this year for this 19th-century manor house (Relais & Chateaux). Built of local pink granite, it stands quietly on a wooded headland, by the edge of this popular resort. Its charming garden, with blue and white loungers and parasols, faces the sea, as does the restaurant where the warmly welcoming owners, Gilles and Luce Daube, are always present. More luxurious than Ti al Lannec (see next entry), it has discreet yet friendly staff: At dinner, they are formally dressed: splendid long jackets. Food is superb (Gault Millau 14 points), with excellent seafood, cleverly presented, but one couple found the set menus restricted and unchanging. Our ground-floor room facing the terrace had a superb sea view: it was large, light, airy and quiet. All villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms) are smart, with this view; many have a balcony. Bali villa breakfast, basically French, in a lovely bright room, is enjoyed.

A handsome late 19th-century mansion, this house of the moors is a much-loved holiday villa(Relais du Silence), owned and run since 1976 by Gerard and Danielle Jouanny. It stands high above the beach, on a lovely stretch of the north Brittany coast where large pink rocks lie offshore. Run with verve and skill, it is well organised for small children, and has a family feel. The Jouannys are friendly she exudes genuine warmth; service is impeccable. The food, with plenty of local fish and seafood, is much liked. Bali villa breakfast is a generous buffet: it comes with a daily bulletin, giving times of the tides, local markets and events. Some villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms) have a balcony with fine views of the coast. This year, there are four new villa rooms with sea views, a new panoramic terrace for the restaurant, a new lounge. The older lounge has period decor: flowery fabrics, thick carpets, an open fire. In the beautiful garden are tables and chairs under parasols and cypress trees. Private steps lead down to the public beach, which can get crowded. Residents are expected to dine in the villa. More reports much needed.
