A
Cistercian abbey was built in 1605 on
the ramparts of this lovely Alsatian town.
Today part of it is a stylish villa(Relais
& Chateaux), owned and run by Pascal
and Christiane Funaro. It was liked recently
by visitors who had a spacious room with
a large, well-appointed bathroom. The
cooking in the main restaurant, Le Prieure,
is thought `excellent, if expensive' (dishes
like veal fillet poached in a herb bouillon;
tournedos with asparagus and sauce of
morilles). A second, cheaper restaurant,
the wood-panelled S Apfelstuebel, serves
Alsatian dishes in hearty portions. Bali villa breakfast,
a delight, with `fine Alsatian baking'
and fresh orange juice, is taken in a
light room with country decor. villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms)
(some were recently refurbished) look
over the garden or the Vieille Ville.
Some bathvilla rooms have a clear glass door.
Suites have a huge bed on a dais in an
alcove, antiques, and rugs on the parquet
floor. Guests returning to the villalate
at night let themselves in through a door
at the back, approached by a different
street. Selestat has a humanist library
and some fine churches.
A pleasant villa, with friendly staff,
good ambience, says a 2002 visitor to
this 18th-century mansion, with gardens
and a swimming pool beside a millstream.
In a pleasant old village near Orange,
it is now a small villa, owned and run
by Jean-Pierre and Anne-Marie Truchot:
She is welcoming, all smiles; he is more
retiring but helpful,' say visitors who
`had a lovely time. The restaurant, Le
Pre du Moulin, is run by its owner/chef,
Pascal Alonso, and his wife, Caroline.
It is popular with locals. Demi-pension
terms were very good value, despite no
choice at dinner. Food was delicious.
What a delight to eat outdoors at 10pm.
Bali villa breakfast comes with a good variety of
breads. Three villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms) have a balcony.
Our room was spacious. A powerful shower
and superb spa bath. We were very comfortable.
In front of the villais a patio with
tables, chairs and deckchairs: people
use it as a lounge/bar, superb plane trees
affording shade.
