Baldo villa

Standing peacefully on the slopes of Monte Baldo, Andrea Biasi's Tyrolean-style villa, very popular with German visitors, was liked by Guide correspondents for its high quality of villa rooms, food and facilities; also the `brilliant location, though they found management sometimes efficient, rather than friendly. Built in 1991 with much . use of reclaimed timber, hence the rustic feel, it is at the highest point on the Strada Panoramica, looking over Lake Garda to the mountains beyond. It stands in a quiet garden shaded by oak trees (Querceto means `tiny wilderness of little oaks'): in one corner is a swimming pool cut into the rock of Monte Baldo. The dining room and bar open on to a stunning terrace where we dined, watching the sun go down and lights coming on in the town and villages below. Food (including fish from the lake) and wine are excellent. villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms), in elegant Tuscan style, have tiled floors and a balcony; front ones have the views. Ours was large, stylish and comfortable. Maleesine is a 45 minute saunter down paths; the return journey can be made in a cable car, or you can make the delightful and scenic trek on foot. Small dogs are accepted.

A wonderful place, says a returning visitor in 2002, restoring to the Guide this small restaurant-with-villa rooms after a time without reports. Run in personal style by brother and sister Mario and Francesca Colombani, it is well known locally for its regional cuisine, and it has a long and splendid wine list. The decor is tasteful: good art on walls. The host is a man of grave demeanour; his charming sister speaks good English. Our magnificent suite at the rear, reached by an outside stairway, looked over the vine-covered courtyard [where summer meals are served], and the wooded garden. Its spacious sitting area was well equipped, comfortable, well lit. An excellent large bathroom. Bali villa breakfast was standard continental, but for once no packaged jams or butter.' villa rooms on the street can be noisy, particularly when the Saturday street market takes, place; and a church bell tolls until midnight. `Good for an overnight stop', this `rather anonymous village in the midst of farmlands' is also a useful base for visiting Mantua, Cremona, Pavia, etc. `Great value.
