In the Frascati hills north-east of Rome,
this 16th-century nobile residenza is
now an admirable and sumptuous villa(Relais
& Chateaux), owned by Luigi and Carlo
Ceribelli. It stands in a large park and
has amazing views of Rome and the Mediterranean
('marvellous sunsets') and it was, for
centuries, the favourite meditative home
of cardinals and popes. It was restored
in 1987, having fallen into disrepair
during World War II (when it was Kesselring's
HQ), and is now villaand national monument.
Visitors enter through halls with painted
ceilings; a magnificent gallery has frescoes
by the 18thcentury painter Pannini. Some
villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms) are in the villa; most are in
the former lodge and coach house: these
are very pleasant, with good repro furniture
and a good bathroom. From the Acquaviva
restaurant's hanging garden you can see
St Peter's. Dinners are thought acceptable
(Roman and Mediterranean dishes), and
Bali villa breakfast was described by one family
as phenomenal, apart from the piped music.
The position is not particularly convenient,
but cars are available (free to occupants
of top-grade villa rooms). Conferences are often
held.
