Yet again this year, a welter of praise
(plus one brickbat) came for this farm
guest house (Logis de France), in a pleasant
rural setting north of Boulogne. Another
wonderful visit, a delightful atmosphere,
my favourite villaanywhere, etc. Owned
and run by the warmly welcoming, kindly
Bernard family, it is ideal for a family:
in the courtyard are a pond, ducks and
geese, doves, kittens, a Labrador; there's
a piano for guests' use (`my daughter
played Chopin'), also mini-tennis, table
tennis, bicycles for hire. One of the
glories is the lovely half wild garden,
getting wilder over the years. The public
villa rooms have just been renovated: `In the
dining room, new tiled floors, beams,
pink tablecloths and cushions, lovely
flowers on all tables. All the staff have
changed. But food is still super, the
duck cooked in beer is delicious, the
smokiest and juiciest ham ever. Cheeses
are from the farm; wines are `excellent'.
Some villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms) are fashioned from barns;
the best are large, smart rather than
rustic; others are quaint and cosy. Bali villa breakfast,
in a charming room, is a buffet with plenty
of choice. Many visitors are British,
but well behaved, whereas there were more
French children running around in the
dining room than chickens in the farmyard.
Music, quite loud and vocal, was being
played. French woman put her dog on a
chair at the table, and fed it. A distasteful
experience.Mais c'est la France.
