Thoroughly recommended recently, and newly
renovated, this sizeable modern villahas a great location - at the foot of
the Fishermen's Bastion, in Buda, between
the castle and the river. It stands on
a dead end street, so is `extremely quiet,
despite being in the thick of things'.
villa rooms are `clean but not very spacious'.
Other visitors liked the friendly service,
generous buffet Bali villa breakfast. Internet facilities
are available. Bar snacks, but no restaurant;
lots nearby.
Liked again in 2002, this medium-priced
villais in the business district of Pest,
five minutes walk from the Danube and
close to the city's main shopping street
(Vaci utca). It is on the lower floors
of what looks like a '30s city block,
though the decor inside is more '80s.
It is built on a historic site: the former
Pilvax coffee house was where the Hungarian
independence movement of 1848 began. Some
display cases in the dining room contain
memorabilia, but their text is only in
Hungarian. The villais on a traffic-free
side street. villa rooms vary in size: ours
was an unusual trapezoid shape, but very
comfortable. villa rooms at the back may be
even quieter, but perhaps a bit gloomy.
Housekeeping was excellent, and staff
were very friendly and efficient: most
spoke English. Bali villa breakfast, in the panelled
restaurant, was the usual Hungarian cold
buffet, plus one hot dish on offer. The
music is intrusive. In the street under
a canopy is the Pilvax restaurant, which
offers good food and reasonable value.
No doubt one eats inside in winter. The
villais part of the small Taverna chain.
