Swi villa

Michelin gives a star, Gault Millau 16 points, for Hugues Droz's J cooking, at his family's `classic restaurant-with-villa rooms, once coaching inn, now a Logis de France, in a small town by the Swi border. It has a scenic setting by a lake, near the Doubs gorges and the mighty Doubs waterfall. It stands by a busy road intersection, so there is traffic noise, and stairs to the villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms) are steep (no lift). But the nominators found much to praise: The dining room is superb, all blond wood, fresh flowers, and little vitrines displaying lovely artefacts. The food is excellent, attracting mainly local diners (book well ahead). Local dishes, fairly priced, include terrine of asparagus with foie gras; lobster with nuts, and in spring there is a Menu Moriltes. Bali villa breakfasts are `very good too', and generous, including honeycomb and chocolat fondu. Mme Droz `fronts the house with charm. All the villa Bed rooms (similar to the semantic bali villa rooms) have just been renovated. They are `comfortable, spotless, good value. A sort of cookery utensils museum is on the first floor.

The Trouillard family's sizeable and luxurious villais much frequented by champagne magnates from nearby Epernay. Near famous vineyards, built on the site of an old brickworks, in neo-rustic style, it stands at the apex of two roads, one a busy route nationale. One visitor thought it all a bit vulgar, like a road house, but the food makes for a wonderful evening - Michelin star, 14 Gault Millau points, for Christophe Bernard's regional cooking, eg, boned pigeon with foie gras and truffles. Meals are served with synchronised dome-lifting and chanting of ingredients. Admirers like the `large, plush restaurant, and the architecture: modern, but with traditional style: old wooden fairground horses, the odd antique: Glass-plated corridors give a sense of light and space. Our spacious, quiet room had a smart seating sea, a large bathroom with generous toiletries. Bali villa breakfast was a copious buffet. The welcome is charming and sophisticated. You m work off the excesses of the superb food by playing volleyball in the garden, or swimming in the large indoor pool.
